Hamilton Robson and Big Motive have been named a finalist in the Mobile App of the Year category at the Digital DNA Awards, the leading technology awards ceremony in Northern Ireland. The awards ceremony is scheduled for March 30, 2023 and will take place at Belfast’s ICC.  

Our Place in Space, part of UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK, is a unique collaboration across art, science and technology – an epic scale model of the solar system designed by artist and children’s author Oliver Jeffers, incorporating a 10km three-dimensional sculpture trail at locations across the UK.  

The project was designed by artist and children’s author Oliver Jeffers and developed by a collaborative team. Hamilton Robson collaborated with Big Motive to design and build the augmented reality (AR) mobile app.  

Hamilton Robson’s development process included using React Native and Unity to create diverse features like AR, GPS location tracking, and step counting. Unity allowed the team to deliver rich AR experiences while React Native gave them the ability to iterate quickly on the creative vision, accessibility, and privacy. The app has also been a key component of a wide-ranging events programme in four UK locations to date, from Cambridge to Belfast.  

Jake Young, Software Engineer at Hamilton Robson who worked on the app in collaboration with Big Motive said of the nomination “Our Place in Space was a unique project that brought together art, science, and technology to create an educational experience. With Augmented Reality we made accessible our solar system to people on Earth, allowing them to explore it for themselves.” 

Luke McNeice, Hamilton Robson’s Head of Engineering said “In 2022, we placed second for the ‘Game of Thrones Studio Tour’ in the same category. So we’re delighted to be nominated again – we’re claiming our place as an immersive tech company to watch.”
