Oliver Jeffers collaborated with Nerve Centre to create a unique scale model of our solar system to intrigue, educate and inspire. The 10km sculpture trail would travel around cities in the UK, and an app would travel with it. The main challenge was harnessing AR technology to enhance the trail and allow people from across the globe to gain a new perspective with OPIS.
Big Motive and Hamilton Robson worked with the Our Place in Space team to design an augmented reality (AR) app that supported public engagement with the sculpture trail and remotely from anywhere in the world. The app lets users see how far they‘ve travelled on their journey through space, learn fun facts, add their own star to the Universe and meet a few of Oliver Jeffers’ characters along the way too.
Utilising React Native and Unity, the team were able to integrate GPS tracking, step counting, and immersive AR features. Custom GPS functionality ensured accurate location tracking, enriching the educational journey with detailed planetary information and interactive content. By optimising battery usage and delivering rich AR experiences, the app provides an engaging and sustainable way to learn about space and enjoy Oliver Jeffers’ striking artwork on an unforgettable scale.
The OPIS app successfully engaged a wide audience, enhancing their understanding of the solar system. It provided a fun, educational, and inclusive experience, with unique AR features and optimised battery usage, now enjoyed globally, including in Hanoi, Vietnam. In 2023 the app won “App of the Year” at the Digital DNA awards and Best Experience Design and Best App Design, IDI Irish Design Awards 2022.
