Immersivity at Crumlin Road Gaol

Audio Visual | Visitor Attraction
Crumlin Road Gaol sought to update its visitor experience with innovative technology while preserving its historical integrity. Hamilton Robson implemented creative AV solutions, including immersive shows and Northern Ireland’s first true holograms. The updates boosted visitor engagement, enhancing the overall experience and ensuring a significant return on investment.
The Challenge

Crumlin Road Gaol, one of the leading visitor attractions in Northern Ireland wanted to introduce new technology to reinvigorate the important stories they wanted to tell. With a long heritage and a five star attraction rating, the team wanted to make some forward looking changes to the attraction, keeping the content, technology and experience fresh.
We were challenged to be as creative as possible with our solution to the brief. We seized the opportunity to act as a true creative AV technology delivery partner while retaining the integrity of this Grade A listed building.

Our Solution

We saw some opportunities to breathe life into the tour through creative Audio Visual while remaining respectful to the history. We sourced the most appropriate technology including sound and state of the art projectors. We created the pre-show content. We brought the tunnel to life with flickering spooky AV effects. We told the story of the condemned cell via a full three-part immersive AV show. One of the most exciting parts of the tour was the implementation of the first true Holograms ever seen in Northern Ireland – a jailer, and a Victorian Warden. We integrated an AV show into a Wessex Helicopter on site. This was done with the highest sensitivity to the subject matter and has intrigued and fascinated thousands of visitors to date.

The Impact

The customer has seen a significant return on investment, as well as high praise from their visitors who come from far and wide to walk the wings of the Gaol. We made adjustments throughout to ensure that the customer’s brief of inclusivity was fulfilled, meaning that visitors of any age or ability will be able to immerse themselves in the history of the Gaol. The use of new technology allowed visitors to be more self-sufficient and still get the full rich content experience from the Holograms, particularly in the context of the pandemic. This has been beneficial for both the venue and the customer, allowing ticket prices to stay static while the experience is enhanced and invested in!
