At Hamilton Robson, our AV field tech team ensures seamless integration of technology and creativity for world-class clients. We spoke with Camila, one of our AV engineers, about her background, her role at Hamilton Robson, and what excites her most about the industry. From live event production to cutting-edge conference room tech, Camila shares insights and advice for those looking to break into the dynamic world of AV.
Q: What was your background prior to joining Hamilton Robson?
Throughout my academic journey, I’ve been deeply involved in the world of events, both behind the scenes and as an artist. I specialised in live and online broadcast events, gaining hands-on experience with NDI and SRT connections and integrating cutting-edge technologies to enhance real-time productions. My approach blends technical expertise with creativity to craft memorable and impactful experiences.
I have a Higher National Diploma in Sound Engineering for Audiovisual and Live Events and a Higher National Diploma in Audiovisual Production and Events from CES/CEV – School of Image, Sound, and Technology in Madrid, Spain. Additionally, I have a degree in Musical Composition from TAI – University of Arts and have studied Musicology at the Complutense University of Madrid.
Q: What does your typical working week look like?
While I began my career as a sound technician, I gradually took on full audiovisual production responsibilities. Joining Hamilton Robson has been a career-defining moment, expanding my skills and knowledge in this innovative field.
In the past two years, I’ve specialized in setting up and supporting video conference rooms. I work with advanced systems like Q-sys, Dante, and Crestron to ensure high-quality business communications. Beyond live events, I ensure the optimal performance of audiovisual equipment installed in client offices.
I provide continuous support to some of our big customer offices based in Dublin, and have contributed to projects for clients around Europe. This exposure has helped me adapt to various installations and client needs quickly. Working in this dynamic environment has honed my technical skills and project management capabilities, especially when collaborating with IT and production teams.
Q: What’s the most exciting tech development you’ve seen in AV recently?
One of the most transformative advancements in the AV industry is Video Broadcast IP technology. This innovation allows for more flexible, scalable, and cost-effective productions. Standards like SMPTE 2110 and NDI are revolutionising how we integrate IP systems, combining IT and broadcast expertise to optimise costs and improve efficiency, especially for remote broadcasts.
In particular, the NDI protocol has changed real-time video management by eliminating the need for costly SDI infrastructure. High-quality streaming over IP networks makes productions more agile and accessible, supporting the hybrid model of online and in-person events. This shift saves time and resources while enhancing scalability for companies aiming to modernise their workflows.
Q: What do you enjoy most about being an AV engineer?
What excites me most is the ability to make the impossible possible. Recent technological advancements have turned once-unimaginable feats into reality. It’s amazing to witness how seamlessly humans adapt to new technology, integrating it into our daily lives. The ease with which we now communicate with people around the world opens up endless possibilities.
Q: Any advice for people looking to get into the industry?
My advice is to embrace change—something that Hamilton Robson fosters constantly. In my two years here, every situation has been an opportunity to learn and grow within a safe yet challenging environment. It’s about turning each new challenge into your comfort zone, a place where you can give your best.
